I think by "tell-tale external wounds", they mean something more forensically helpful than just blunt force trauma, e.g., gunshot wounds.
But wouldn't falling out of the sky be enough to cause the blunt force trauma? Blunt force trauma does not necessarily explain how they fell out of the sky in the first place.
